Antonín Dvořák’s American Suite draws inspiration from his years in the US, blending Bohemian lyricism with the rhythms and spirit of his adopted home.
Written during one of the composer’s most creative periods, the suite evokes open landscapes, folk traditions and an unmistakable sense of optimism.
Grammy-winning pianist Michelle Cann is the soloist for Florence Price’s Piano Concerto. Performed in one movement, it showcases the groundbreaking composer’s distinctive voice with melodies and rhythms rooted in African American musical traditions. Both lyrical and exuberant, the concerto is a compelling testament to Price’s originality and enduring legacy.
The concert concludes with William Grant Still’s Symphony No.4, subtitled Autochthonous (native to the soil). Written during the Second World War, the symphony offers an uplifting vision of the American spirit, weaving together expansive melodies, vibrant orchestral colours and an unmistakable sense of hope and belonging.
Together, these works explore what it means to find inspiration in a place – whether newly discovered or deeply rooted.
