The Chineke! Chamber Ensemble returns to St John's with a typically varied programme placing music by composers of Black and ethnically diverse heritage from the 20th and 21st centuries alongside Mendelssohn's youthful Piano Sextet, written in his precocious teenage years which also produced the Octet and Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream.
After William Grant Still's attractive arrangement of familiar folk songs which opens the programme, we will hear music by contemporary women composers working on three different continents! The American Valerie Coleman's effervescent wind quintet is followed by British composer, Errollyn Wallen's, septet NNENNA commissioned by the Cambridge Festival in 2018, and a new work, Ngarrgooroon by the Australian composer, Deborah Cheetham, which was commissioned by Chineke! and first performed at the Adelaide Festival in March this year
