The Chineke! Orchestra makes its debut at the Butterworth Hall at the start of a relationship that will see the orchestra perform regularly in Coventry and working closely with students and other community groups in the area.
Chineke! is Europe’s first professional orchestra comprised of a majority of black and minority ethnic (BME) musicians. Each of its programmes includes works by composers of BME heritage and this programme opens with Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Othello Suite taken from incidental music written for a production of the play in 1911, and including the bewitching Children’s Intermezzo.
Tai Murray, a former BBC New Generation Artist is the soloist in Bruch’s ever-popular Violin Concerto and Chineke! celebrate the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth with a performance of his 7th Symphony.
“The beginning of something culturally inspiring, a musical event of genuine artistic value.” The Guardian
“If more black youngsters are to be inspired to take up classical music, these are the authentic role models they need.” The Times
